I haven't been doing this type of photography for very long. For a little background, I am a graduate of UW-Whitewater where I was a Theatre major specializing in Publicity. I wanted to be a writer ever since junior high school, and I thought becoming a publicist would give me the opportunity to write about what I loved most. But, after graduation (way back in 1997), finding a job as a publicist was just as hard as finding any other job in the arts. I was an intern at Waukesha Civic Theatre in my hometown, and enjoyed it very much, but my career defaulted into administrative work and many different companies.
Flash forward to last year. After years of stress in my last administrative position, I was let go, and decided to pursue photography as a hobby full-time. I had always enjoyed taking photos in my teens and 20's, but in the days of film, it was expensive to do it all the time. But now that digital has taken over, it provides a (relatively) cheap way to indulge in my passion. I upgraded my equipment to a Canon DSLR with a zoom lens (thanks to inheritance money) and went to work building my collection of photos. I've since had a great time taking photos of architecture around Milwaukee, macros of flowers, and local events.
The idea of pursuing theatre performance photography came to me late last year. Since winter in Wisconsin is especially depressing, I wanted to find a way to keep learning about photography and keep up my hobby. That's when I thought about volunteering at a local community theater as a publicity photographer, and as luck would have it, Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove needed someone to do just that. So, I have been taking performance photos for them for use as both publicity and for their archives, and I'm having the best time! I've captured performance photos for two of their mainstage shows, which you can see above and below, and for their 2013-2014 Season Preview.
